The Jedi Order is an ancient peacekeeping organization. All Jedi have to learn to live by the Jedi Code-a set of rules that they must obey. According to the Code, the Jedi must use the Force for good. They should have compassion for every form of life, and should engage in combat only to defend others or themselves. It takes years to become a Jedi Knight and so training usually begins at a very early age.

In order to follow the Code it is important that young Jedi, known as Younglings, learn to remain calm and focused in stressful situations. Younglings are taught to use lightsabers as well as techniques for fighting skillfully in a duel. At times their eyes are covered while they train; that way they can learn to feel the Force and use their instincts, instead of relying on what they can see.

Older trainees, called Padawans, also learn how to use the Force to move objects without touching them. A Force pull enables Jedi to bring something to them. A Force push is a powerful technique that repels objects or opponents. To help them in battle, Jedi must also learn to be physically strong, fit, and agile.
